Storm Ewan is set to sweep across the country with wind speeds of up to 70mph – just days after Doris wreaked havoc across the UK.  

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for strong winds in the north-west of England, Wales and eastern Scotland.

Ewan, the fifth-named storm of the season, hit Ireland this morning and is pushing across the Irish Sea this afternoon.

Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected in the north west of the UK, with the potential of speeds of up to 70mph in exposed coastal areas.  

It comes as Britain prepares for a cold snap that could see parts of the country hit with snow in March.

Temperatures are set to fall to lows of -2C overnight at the start of next week, as a band of showery weather bringing hail and thunder sweeps across the country.  

Snow is expected in the north of the country as temperatures drop, particularly in higher regions. 

Strong winds caused by the remnants of Storm Ewan will continue into Monday, with speeds of up to 45mph expected on the south coast. 

Storm Doris caused devastation around the country on Thursday and may have left Britain with a bill of more than£400million.

Overturned trees were cleared from roads and railway lines after 100mph winds hit transport networks, causing traffic jams for miles and leaving thousands stranded in train stations.

On Saturday, the UK was hit by wet and windy conditions as a band of heavy rain moved across the country from the north west. 

Met forecaster Marco Petagna said: ‘We’re looking at gusts of 50 to 60mph across the Irish sea, pushing through across towards Scotland this afternoon.  

‘Storm Ewan is coming in from the south-west of Ireland, tracking towards the north-east and towards the Shetlands.’

‘There will be some heavy bursts of rain coming in with the storm, particularly in the north-west of the UK.’ 

Bookmakers have not cut the odds on it being the coldest ever March to 5/6. The current record low is -4.6C.
