While the superhero film genre has occasionally dipped its toe into more mature, realistic territory with rare films like The Dark Knight, the genre is, by nature, still for kids. After all, that’s where the money is — kids are the ones who will drag their parents to the theater (extra ticket sales!) and demand studio-licensed toys, clothes, Halloween costumes, and school supplies. They’re the reason why the studios will labor to make sure their superhero movies don’t earn a family-unfriendly R rating, ensuring that there will be no nudity, minimal cursing, and little or no blood, regardless of how many people are killed. In addition, a superhero film’s emotional intensity and complexity will be limited to what producers imagine a child could understand, accept, and endure.
